Pool of the Year 2021
WINNER | Blue Stone Pools
Averna Homes, the home builder of this majestic mutli-million dollar 3 level private residence, required a pool builder that could deliver a design that was not only extraordinary, but innovative to meet the challenges this elevated river front property in Applecross presented.
Blue Stone Pools fully designed and constructed the swimming pool and spa, including the surround levels and outdoor entertaining areas. The only input from the home builder was the integration to the rest of the home and final finishing selections, which made this an inspiring project requiring all the skillset to deliver the finished product to all expectations and beyond.
The rapid incline of the site lead itself to an infinity style pool, giving commanding views at the terrace level of the home. The journey through this amazing 16m by 5.5m water shape begins at a large 3m raised island spa with reclined seats and luxurious stainless steel fittings. The soffit edge beam is refined at such a height that the water seems to be running underneath, with the entry steps to the pool designed around the spa allowing an illusion that the spa is floating like an island. The spa also spilling over on 4 sides that integrates with the main pool’s curved spill over edge. In front of the spa are further transitioning steps that lead in to the main pool area, with 2m Baja ledge on one side to rest up on and take in the beautiful views. The ledge also cleverly cascades over on two sides to create a water wall feature as a backdrop to the outdoor cinema lounge area. The other side has an everlasting marine timber deck cantilevered over the pool with led lighting strip underneath. The whole pool being elevated out of the ground allowed for a natural appeal with minimum use of glass fencing, to achieve maximum unobstructed views, within the pool zone. Over 25metres of infinity edge across 7 different spill over faces and 3 catchment tanks, required millimetre precision to be energy efficient with pump sizing.
The Swimming pool, Spa and exposed walls were all mosaic tiled in Italian porcelain with elements of natural basalt rock and off form treated concrete. The colours selected gave a direct relationship to the river and surround flora, as the prominence of the water shape was meant to be. A pool of this calibre also had to have all the expected equipment quality, UV and mineral sanitation, gas and solar heating with full in-floor cleaning system.
There is also another very important element of the swimming pool, the structural complexity of the project and its importance to the home. The swimming pool was built in three stages; the spill over trough being the 1st, which primary purpose was not only to act as balance tank for the pool water but to also act as a retaining foundation for the main part of the home and basement levels. The second stage required the swimming pool and column footing that later became the inaugural part of the home out door ceiling and roof cover. The 1 metre square planter each side of the spill over wall, reaching 3m in height, also acted as pilings beneath for engineered stabilisation. The final stage was the construction of the quality spa and surround water areas with the concrete beam to ceiling height that protrudes through the spa wall.
